Description

Ayira meen is a small freshwater fish that is very popular in Tamil Nadu. Ayirai fish from the Vaigai river is considered the tastiest. Ayira meen is called as Indian spiny loach in English. They are also called Asara meen in Chennai. Ayira meen is caught when the water levels of the river reduce. Ayira meen is difficult to culture artificially.

We can find Spinned Loach fish only in the freshwater like canals and fields and streams. Particularly we can see this fish mainly in the two months before the paddy harvest. Only in those months, Spinned loach fish will come on sale in the markets. Like meat, this fish contains a lot of nutrients.
